Do you want to perform an update from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro in a Microsoft Intune environment?
In Microsoft Intune a Device Configuration profile can be created that will change the Windows 10 edition on behalf of the user. Here is how it is done:
- Create the Edition Upgrade Policy from Device Configuration > Profiles > Create Profile.
- Give the profile a Name, Description (optional), and select Windows 10 and Later from the Platform dropdown.
- For Profile Type select Edition Upgrade and mode switch. A new blade will open up and you will see the Edition Upgrade settings.
Actually, you can select to go to a variety of Windows 10 SKU's.
But how do I know what can go to what?
For the most up to date table of the SKU's you can go to visit this URL:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/windows-10-edition-upgrades
Remember that green ticks mean reboot required. Blue ticks mean no reboot required. Black X means not supported.
Once you've identified the upgrade path you want is supported (an example of this is Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Education Edition), simply select the Edition you want to end up at and enter your product key.
- Save your changes and assign your policy to the relevant group of users or devices. When the devices pick up the policy the edition will be changed. Depending on the edition a reboot may need to be initiated to complete the change.
About jumping multiple editions:
- For example, you can go from Home → Pro → Enterprise even though a direct jump from Home → Enterprise is not possible. It simply means you would need to have 2 policies - one that applies the Home → Pro key (possibly via a PowerShell script since MDM uplift from Home to Pro isn't supported), and one with the Pro → Enterprise key that uses the Edition Upgrade policy. The policies would need to be targeted to the different sets of devices. You could do something with dynamic device groups in Azure AD and target the policies to those groups based on operating system type.
Please remember this additional information:
As devices have their Windows 10 editions updated, they dynamically move between the groups until they end up in the group that applies the required edition of Windows 10.
