Issue: When you try to assign an Alias to another user or mailbox in Exchange Online via GUI or PowerShell that is currently being used as a primary email for any other user or mailbox, it gets revert to the previous one.
Reason: Make sure that the Alias you are trying to change is selected as a current primary email address of any other user, mailbox or group in question. Follow the below steps to resolve this:
1. Open the account settings from O365 Admin Center Active User section and click on Manage username and email.
2. Change email from the primary email address section:
3. click on Save Changes
It will take at least 1 hour for the changes to reflect.
Note: The above case is only for cloud-only scenario. The changes need to be done from On-Premises AD in Hybrid scenario.
